I don't remember much of RCRU being overtly humorous, while RCG made me laugh a lot, but the joke at the ending is just plain distasteful. Meanwhile, there are things that fans of beat-em-ups don't necessarily like things that differ radically from the main style of gamepaly, and so putting them in is risky.Īs to superior story, that's almost like comparing a dried out apple (RCRU) to a fermented orange (RCG). RCG has less variety so it could be argued it's more monotonous, but potential to be monotonous comes with the territory of being a beat-em-up so people who buy such games can be presumed more tolerant of it than some other gamers. Then there's the milk quest and the chase missions. Another place the game sags under its weight is in the character roster lots of variety and replay value, but it sucks that all of the characters have to be leveled up from 1 individually, especially given how rough the game is on beginning characters. Complex controls make for a deep game, but it's hard to appreciate them in a game that starts you off against enemies far tougher than yourself, forcing you to do a lot of running to undeclared grinding spots. That said, the game could have handled many of its elements better. I feel that for a beat-em-up that deep, complex controls are objectively better. With how many times context-sensitivity caused the wrong action to trigger in River City Girls, I reaffirm that I'm a fan of RCRU's more complex, many-button controls. Underground was just lame and stupid, and their attempt to pull an Undertale and suddenly become meta as f*ck at the end just made me groan. Girls was also fairly stupid, but at least got some laughs out of me. But there are some awful missions, namely the chase missions and fetch quests. Mechanically that game rocks, and has loads of variety. Originally posted by davidb11:I'm not 100% certain why people hate River City Underground.
